2nd French Producer - 40 % of Champagne – The Savoie supplies both French and foreign wine merchants.

4 labels and 22 crus : Vin de Savoie (16 crus), Roussette de Savoie (4 crus), Seyssel, Crépy.

23 vines of the 250 used in France, of which 7 are unique : Altesse, Gringet, Jacquère (the most widely used), Molette, the Mondeuse white grape, the Mondeuse black grape, Persan. 8 if you consider the Roussette d'Ayze. 9 or 10 if you take into consideration the Velteliner rosé cited by Rabelais as being the Valterine originating from the Savoie and the Verdesse is still being produced in the Isère region in Gésivaudan and the Drac Valley (we are waiting on the results of a study).

Imported vines : Aligoté, Chardonnay, Gamay, Pinot, Roussanne

History : The Allobroges were growing wine in our region from 400 BC. In the first century AD, Columelle and Pliny the Elder made reference to the wines of the Savoie as a diuretic (jacquère) and picatum (Mondeuse or Allobrogica, the historical name)

Winemaking techniques in the Savoie : Jacquère Vine Alcoholic Fermentation at a low temperature - No malo-lactic fermentation is used in order to keep the freshness of the malic acid - no decanting is used to keep the “beading” (residual gas)- Wines are kept on sedimenting racks for several months to obtain flavour and protect the wine from oxidation.

Latest Vintage wines and wines for laying down : Wines for lying down such as: Bergeron, Malvoisie, the Mondeuse and Roussette whites; the Mondeuse and Persan reds. These vintage wines, which are becoming more and more reputable, have been served in many of the great restaurants in France.
The World Congress of Winemakers met in the Savoie in Autumn 2000 and the National Congress of Oenologists in 2006.
